Morris has a season. Most sides practise indoors in winter, dance outdoors in summer, and rest a little in between. Some events recur most years - here's the rhythm.
The traditional opening of the summer morris season. Sides dance at dawn - many at the top of a hill, many at a riverside, many on a town square. People bring tea and bacon sandwiches. It is the only time of year you'll find yourself voluntarily up at 4am.
The bulk of the year. Sides perform in market squares, village fetes, country pub car parks and folk festivals. You might pre-arrange a "tour" of three pubs in an evening - half an hour at each, a pint at each, all on foot.
A "Day of Dance" is a whole-day event where one side hosts a group of others - sometimes ten, sometimes thirty. The town gets a half-dozen morris performances in a circuit. There is always lunch involved. There is almost always a final mass dance.
Big festivals like Sidmouth, Whitby, Towersey and Warwick run a week or weekend of music, dance, workshops and ceilidhs. Morris is everywhere. If you want to see the breadth of British folk culture in one trip, go.
Things slow down outdoors. Some sides have "last dance" outings, others have an end-of-season meal. Many move back into the practice hall to learn new dances for the following year. Halloween-adjacent dates bring out some of the more theatrical Border and Molly sides.
Wassailing is the old tradition of going round orchards and houses in midwinter with songs, drinking, and the occasional dance. Many sides do Christmas markets, indoor pub dance-outs, mummers' plays, and New Year wassails. Longsword and rapper come into their own.
